Diode laser treatment uses focused light. The focused light allows for targeted treatment of each hair.
The wavelength of the diode laser, at 808 nm, is ideal for the energy transfer to the body's own pigment, melanin, in the hair. This pigment converts the light into heat. During a treatment with the diode laser, the handpiece sends out controlled light pulses over the desired area. There, the light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair root.
Thanks to the frequent pulses and therefore lower energy, the risk of burns can be reduced.
The aim of every treatment is to denature the proteins. These are found in the hair root and are essential for the growth of every hair. Denaturation takes place through the heat that is applied during a treatment. If the proteins are denatured, the hair root is no longer supplied with nutrients and therefore falls out after a while. For the same reason, hair regeneration is prevented, which is the basic principle of many laser methods.
A laser diode is a semiconductor component related to the light-emitting diode (LED), but which generates laser radiation. To do this, a heavily doped pn junction is operated at high current densities.
The choice of semiconductor material determines the wavelength that the semiconductor laser emits. It is typically in the near infrared and red, but blue and ultraviolet laser diodes are also manufactured.
Function:
The emission of light is caused by recombination processes of electrons and holes at the transition between the p- and n-doped region. The end surfaces of the component are partially reflective and thus form an optical resonator in which a standing light wave can form. If there is a population inversion, the induced emission can become the dominant radiation process. The laser diode then emits laser radiation.
The generation of population inversion in laser diodes occurs through electrical pumping; a direct electrical current in the forward direction ensures a constant supply of electrons and holes. The pump current at which the laser operation begins is also referred to as the laser threshold or threshold current Ith.
